A Lima, Peru-based restaurant run by a couple called ‘Central’ was voted by food critics and chefs as the world’s best restaurant in the world on Tuesday.

The announcement reads “Not a fine-dining temple in Paris or Tokyo – or even a game-changer in Catalonia or Copenhagen – but a husband-and-wife spot in Peru, a country perched on the furthest-western coastline of South America that’s also famous for being the home of a certain Paddington Bear.”

The people behind Central is a husband-and-wife duo Virgilio Martinez and Pia León who are chefs by profession. This is the first time for a female chef to earn the top spot.

The 2023 awards ceremony that took place in Valencia, Spain, is a result of evaluation and vote by top food critics and chefs putting the best restaurants in the global culinary spotlight.

The organizers of the annual event made a rule change in 2019 limiting the top spot only to restaurants that have not made it to No. 1 in previous years.

Announced on the same day was the 2023 World’s 50 Best restaurants list which includes three Tokyo restaurants, 24 territories in five continents with 12 new to the list.
