Vanessa Cardenas Gonzalez, a 33-year old mom in California died from COVID-19 after giving birth to a baby daughter, Heaven, on Nov. 9.  Husband Alfonso said it was his wife’s idea to name their newborn, “Heaven”.

Speaking to Fox TV on Wednesday, Alfonso said his wife of 13 years fell ill in early November during the latter term of her pregnancy. She had tested positive for Covid-19 a few days later.

Heartbroken and shattered, Vanessa was discharged from the hospital but couldn’t hold her baby for fear of  infecting the child. Alfonso told her not to worry because she will win her battle with Covid-19.

Her husband would show the baby on FaceTime while she was readmitted to the hospital. That was the only contact she has had with the baby before dying of heart attack on Dec. 14.

The newborn daughter was a wish granted for a couple who have two older sons together. Vanessa’s husband said he plans to keep his wife’s personal things to hand down to his daughter when she gets older.

A GoFundMe page  was set up by their family friend Desiree Vera to help out the Gonzalez family in the wake of Vanessa’s death. Vera is also one of those who has lost a father to COVID-19 complications.

The outpouring of love and sympathy for the family has helped raise $42,956 exceeding the $10,000 fundraising goal.

Alfonso reminded others that COVID-19 remains to be a prevalent threat.

Alfonso said, “Wear your mask.”
