The Superboy, Jonathan Kent, son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, is slated to come out as bisexual in Superman: Son of Kal-El #5, written by Tom Taylor, scheduled to be published on November 9.

Jon and his male friend Jay Nakamura, a reporter with special powers, are in a same-sex relationship and will share a kiss.

“The idea of replacing Clark Kent with another straight white savior felt like a missed opportunity,” explains the series writer, Tom Taylor, in an interview with The New York Times.

“Superman’s symbol has always stood for hope, for truth, and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more,” says Tom. “Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.”

The new role assignment represents a shift from otherworldly Christian values and manifests the grounded human ideal.

This will not be the first time for a comic book hero to be a part of the LGBTQ community. In the latest version of Robin, it was announced in August that he would have a boyfriend. Meanwhile, in March, the title of Captain America has been passed on to a gay character.

Clark Kent married Lois Lane and had a son Jonathan named after Clark’s father.

Now at 17 Jon has all of his father’s powers.  Although he had previously gone by the name Superboy, he’s assumed the mantle of Superman while his father heads off to deep space for an indefinite period of time.

The character whose identity update was fitted to be more relevant to the current generation, is seen protesting against the deportation of refugees, stopping a high school shooting, and trying to put out wildfires that were the cause of the climate crisis.
