Study finds Diabetes type 2 drug is effective for weight loss and maintenance

Many people had never heard of the diabetes tirzepatide treatment. But a recent study published by JAMA Network has made the drug grab headlines as an effective means of losing weight today.

The study concludes that adults with excess weight issues who had achieved significant weight reduction over a 36-week tirzepatide treatment period and continued treatment with maximum tolerated dose for another 52 weeks, were able to maintain their weight and continue shedding pounds compared to those who switched to placebo.

Tirzepatide is a type 2 diabetes injectable medication and weight loss drug . Essentially, it is a peptide consisting of 39 amino acid residues that work by activating GIP and GLP-1 receptors when injected weekly and can be used with or without other medicines.

Tirzepatide is a generic name for “Mounjaro” produced in the United States for type 2 diabetes but Zepbound for chronic weight management.  The product is sold in Japan as “Manjaro” by Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharmaceutical.
