People in Tokyo will have every reason to get excited because the first Asian production of the hit play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been scheduled for the summer of 2022 at Tokyo’s TBS Akasaka ACT Theater.

The joint announcement was made today by producers Sonia Friedman, Colin Callender, Harry Potter Theatrical Productions, along with Japanese partners TBS and HoriPro, and the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) .

Prior to its debut staging in Asia, the TBS Akasaka ACT Theater is all set for a renovation of the venue specific to the play in 2021.

The two-part sequel written by Jack Thorne and directed by John Tiffany based on J.K. Rowling’s bestselling fantasy novels, opened on Broadway in 2018 and won six Tony Awards including Best Play.

The Japanese production will be the seventh mounting of the play to open across the world.  Germany will have its premiere on March 15 in Hamburg and Canada in the fall of 2021. Other productions are already open in London, New York City, San Francisco and Australia.
