The number of children in Japan continues to decline.

The estimated number of under-15 minors in Japan has hit an alarming 14.01 million mark as of April 1. The downward trend has been happening for 43 consecutive years according to Japan’s internal ministry on Saturday.

The sharp drop by 330,000 from the previous year is the lowest level it has reached since the 1950 records.

The population of boys in Japan stood at 7.18 million while girls at 6.83 million.

As a result, the overall percentage of the youth population in Japan declined for 50 years in a row, logging a record low of 11.3 pct.

According to U.N. and other estimates on different survey periods,  Japan had the second-lowest share of children in the total population among 37 countries with a population of more than 40 million.
