On December 19, 2020, a 34-year old Frenchman Romain Vandendorpe from Wattrelos, France, broke world record for immersing himself in ice cubes for two hours, 35 minutes and 43 seconds.

Romain, a healthcare worker, took up the challenge in order to raise money for children with cancer after meeting Augustine, a four-year-old girl who died from brain cancer two years ago. The incident made a lasting impression on him.

The young Frenchman said he trained for many hours a day in an ice-cold jacuzzi inside a 500-liter freezer buried in snow before attempting to break the world record.  He said it is possible to “overcome human limits” by using neuro-cognitive techniques.

Dubbed as the new “Ice man”,  Vandendorpe sends out an inspiring message to all: “If we train, if we give our all, we can make progress and obtain results that can improve things.”

In order to raise funds, the head of Wonder Augustine association urged people to donate one euro for every minute that Romain spent immersed in the freezing ice cube. Fifty people were on the location where Vandendorpe set this new record.

His message to children fighting cancer: “Stay hopeful always.”
