Japanese Alpha kids dream jobs: Athlete and pâtissier/baker

By on May 7, 2024

What do you want to be when you grow up?  Despite the rise of social media, non IT-related jobs ‘Athlete’ and ‘patissier/baker’ ranked high when the question was lobbed at Japanese children through a survey.

The online survey conducted by major chemical firm Kuraray Co. asked 4,000 children enrolling in elementary school from 2024. The survey results were released ahead of Children’s Day on Sunday.

Pastry chef and bakery worker ranked high for girls for the 26th consecutive year since 1999.

To be an athlete appears to be the top job preferred by around 16% of the boys – the first time in four years. In a nationwide survey conducted by Adecco in 2021, YouTuber, engineer/programmer, and game creator were listed in the top ten jobs for boys at both elementary and junior high school. Has the enthusiasm for digital devices in Japanese boys waned over time?
