Responding to the threat posed by the highly contagious new variant reported in the United Kingdom, Chief Cabinet Secretary Kato Katsunobu told reporters today that the country will be intensifying  measures and border controls starting Thursday.

From December 27,  Japanese nationals returning from the UK will be asked to present a proof that they have been tested within 72 hours of departure.

Kato said protecting people’s health and lives remains to be the Japanese government’s top priority in  ensuring a safe and secure end of the year. The health condition of people who enter Japan will continue to be thoroughly monitored with the hope of responding quickly to threats based on information it gathers and data analysis.
