Daily intake of Vitamin D supplements reduce cancer mortality by 12%

Jikei Medical University announced in an international joint research on May 9 that taking vitamin D supplements reduces cancer mortality by 12%, regardless of cancer type.

The findings published in March involved a meta-analysis of 100,000 people who participated in a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial that included the Amaterasu test conducted by Japanese Professor Mitsuyoshi Urashima of the Department of Molecular Epidemiology at  Tokyo Jikei University of Medicine.

The international joint research funded by charity organization German Cancer Aid, was a collaborative study with cancer research centers in Germany, Harvard University and the La Jolla Institute of Allergy and Immunology in the United States, the Universities of California, San Francisco, Finland, Australia, and New Zealand.

According to Professor Urashima, 10 million die out of 20 million cancer patients in the world. “Although cancer drugs are yet being developed, cancer treatment alone costs more than 10 million yen a year.  No side effects have been reported with Vitamin D supplements for intake within 2000 IU daily,” says the professor.

“If we can reduce cancer deaths by 12%, we can theoretically save 1.2 million lives a year,” he added.

The professor however admits the intake of vitamin D supplements can not significantly suppress cancer death.

“This is because, although we generally got significant results as a whole, it was not the case for each trial, even for the Amaterasu test we conducted. Thus, we had to start the second Amaterasu 2 trial from January 2022 to clarify the effectiveness and safety of vitamin D supplement administration in one clinical trial,” he added.

A test conducted in Japan named Amaterasu, a randomized trial of vitamin D3 supplementation at 2,000 IU/day showed the potential benefit in a subgroup of patients with 53-positive digestive tract cancer.

Vitamin D, produced when the body is exposed to sun, is essential for bone strength and may support the immune system, help regulation inflammation.

Despite its name, vitamin D is not a vitamin but a hormone that promotes the absorption of calcium in the body.
