Kimono and Athleisure. Do they go together?

By on October 15, 2021

The kimono is undergoing a major evolution in Japan.

Many traditionally hand-woven fabrics used for kimono are still made in Japan, but the industry has been suffering a decline.

From pillow cases and wall art to western-style clothing, designers are trying every scenario to incorporate time-honored kimono print and fabrics into their creation –  in the hope that the national costume of Japan –  remains visible for centuries to come.

Brands like Kimono by Nadeshiko know it simply couldn’t survive on the fabric’s rustic appeal alone.

By fusing aspects of Japanese sensibility, casual print mix and athleisure, it came up with “Patchwork Kimono“.  The design approach using an array of Kurume Kasuri prints (dead stock fabrics) as opposed to a single fabric is a move away from how things used to be. The result, according to Nadeshiko is a fresh “easy-to-mix-and-match casual look that goes with sneakers and hats”.
