Half of Japan’s Job Burnout-related suicides happened within 6 days after the onset of depression symptoms

By on October 26, 2021

Japan reported that 497 suicides between 2012 and 2017 were karojisatsu or job burnout-related.

In 47.3 percent of these cases, suicide happened in less than a week after the symptoms of depression or other mental diseases started, according to Japan’s Cabinet-approved white paper on the prevention of death by overwork.

The alarming number of cases involving a short period of time between the onset of mental illness and death highlights the importance of timely suicide mitigation.

In 18.7 percent of the cases, suicide occurred between the seventh and 29th day from when the symptoms started, and between the 30th and 89th day for the remaining 15.1 percent.

The report also revealed that 64 percent of victims did not consult a medical institution for their symptoms.

If you, your family, work colleague or anyone you know is suffering from depression, please get medical help from any of the clinics listed below. If  depression goes untreated, it may get worse, cause suffering and possibly lead to suicide, as it does to 1 of every 10 people with depression.
