Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder in which people have abnormally low body weight as a result of excessive dieting or vomiting after eating food.  People suffering from the condition face risks of it affecting their everyday life.

In 2020, the number of reported anorexia nervosa cases in children spiked some 50 percent when the novel coronavirus crisis began. It was 40 percent higher in 2022 than pre-pandemic levels according to the survey by the National Center for Child Health and Development.

It remains unclear when the physical and mental impacts of the prolonged pandemic will improve. The center continues to call for careful consideration be given to children.
