The delicious Georgian dish everyone is talking about on social media.

By on March 4, 2020

It created a stir on social media when Matsuya announced in December 2019 that Sukumerli would only be offered in selected stores and that it would gradually be discontinued.

Japan went mad and so did our son, who’s completely hooked on the dish.

It’s no exaggeration to say that no weekend passes by without the family making a stop at Matsuya for this addictive dish.

For the uninitiated, ‘Sukumerli‘ is a thick chicken stew with lots of garlic, cheese, and sweet potatoes. Surprisingly, it is not a Japanese dish. It is one of the family stew dishes in Georgia, traditionally slow-cooked and served in clay pots. Georgia is a Eurasian region located between Western Asia and Eastern Europe.

Matsuya, best known for “gyudon” (beef bowl), is a chain of restaurants in Japan with several branches in and out of Tokyo. After briefly taking sukumerli out of the menu and receiving 20,000 messages on social media, the restaurant chain decided to bring it back from January 14 this year.

Even better, Matsuya recently shared its famous recipe on cookpad so people can cook it at home. So here it is.

INGREDIENTS:  (serves 2)

Chicken thigh (250-300g)
Salt and pepper Appropriate amount
Salad oil 1 tsp
Garlic (grated) About 10g (or as much as you like)
Unsalted butter (even salted is OK)
About 15g milk 200cc
White stew powder 1 (about 20g)
Sweet potato About 100-150g
lemon juice
Soy sauce few drops
Shredded cheese adjust amount as desired
parsley for garnishing

FOLLOW THE STEPS

1. Cut sweet potato in bite-sized pieces and put in a deep bowl with water.
2. Remove water and wrap it with a plastic. Microwave (600w) for around 3 minutes. The goal is to make it tender.
3. On a tray, cut chicken and season with salt and pepper.
4. Heat oil on a skillet and fry the chicken in medium heat for about 5 minutes.
5. Turn over when color is light brown. Add minced garlic to boost aroma. You can add quantity as desired.
6. Then, when aroma has set in, add 200 cc of milk and butter. Simmer for around 5 minutes on low heat.
7. Turn off heat for a while. Add the sweet potatoes and simmer for another 5 minutes or until the sauce thickens.
8. Add lemon juice, soy sauce and shredded cheese last. Garnish with parsley and you’re done!
