What this Japanese nomadic couple encountered in their cross-continent adventure

Some people are born with a passion, curiosity and adventurous spirit to explore new places and make things happen, despite the hurdles.

Such was the adventure of a Japanese couple who embarked on an epic life experience traveling from Japan to Africa in a light mini van that took four years to complete. They documented each moment for everyone to read in their upcoming book with a Japanese title, ‘Konya, sekai ga owatta to shite mo, koko ni wa, o shirase ga kisou ni nai.’ (In English, it means ‘Being in a faraway, isolated place’).

The 90,000-km epic car ride started in 2015 and ended in 2019. On board a ferry, they departed for Russia from Hokkaido, Japan and started to travel by car from there.

The whole trip included Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Iceland, Andorra, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya.

However, in late 2019, just as the couple were heading back to Japan, they hit a snag. They ended up being stuck somewhere at the height of the pandemic.

By some ironic turn of events, the route back home could not be made because of the ongoing Ukraine war.

The couple shares their journey on YouTube in hopes of inspiring and educating others in a positive way.
