Japan residents now one step closer to having COVID-19 booster shots

By on October 29, 2021

A Japanese health ministry panel gave the green light Thursday on a plan to make  a booster shot available to everyone who has received two COVID-19 vaccine doses.

A booster shot is expected to be given no later than eight months after the second vaccine jab. No target date has been set for booster shots, but will likely start in December.  The medical workers having been the first group to receive vaccination in February, will be getting the booster shots first.

The health ministry is scheduled to decide the scheduling in November.

The ministry panel took into consideration an overseas survey showing the efficacy of U.S. drugmaker Pfizer Inc.’s vaccine wanes from 88 to 47 percent after five months in people aged 12 or older.

The panel also agreed to vaccinate as many people as possible after booster shots start.
