Why are Christmas cakes more expensive this year?

By on December 6, 2023

Festive strawberry shortcakes fill supermarkets at this time of year.

But don’t be surprised to see the price of a whole Christmas cake surge by a few hundred yen.

Japan’s Teikoku Databank Ltd. said 15-cm run-of-the-mill cakes are up by 325 yen or an average increase of 7.8% compared to last year’s. Custom cakes are a different story.

Apart from higher import costs of main ingredients, a post-pandemic demand recovery pushed 81 brand vendors out of 100 to raise their price.

Twenty fancier cake brands sold at department stores in the 4,000 and 6,000 yen range are up by 500 yen this year.
