Nomura Research institute said Wednesday the number of rich households in Japan has increased in 2021 by about 158,000 compared to the 2019 survey.

The record-high increase refers to 1.48 million households with net financial assets of at least 100 million yen or US$ 733,283.00 based on today’s exchange rate.

The survey, which started in 2005, classifies households based on the amount of net financial assets, calculated by subtracting housing loans and other liabilities from financial assets such as savings, shares, bonds and life insurance policies.

The aggregate amount of assets by households with net financial assets of at least 100 million yen came to 364 trillion yen (approx. US$2.7 trillion), or an increase by 31 trillion yen from 2019.

The number of wealthy households in Japan has been steadily increasing since 2013 following former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Abenomics policy mix.
