Tokyo’s Adachi Biological Park is an educational place for preschoolers to connect with nature

Preschoolers are always on tight schedule with indoor and outdoor day care and school activities always structured. Is your child getting enough connection with nature?

My 3-year old clearly wasn’t.  To support this connection through free adventure and immersion into nature, I took her one weekend to Adachi biological park (Adachi Seibutsuen) located in Adachi ward. It’s just a 20-minute bus ride from Ayase Station at the Hokima 2-chome stop. This park is possibly one of the best environments for children to explore, absorb, and enjoy.

It has a playground outside and opens at 9:30 am. Admission fee to the biological park is just 300 yen for adults but preschoolers get in free.

Going to the park, though, can be a tad stressful. To avoid epic tantrums, packing snacks, diaper, wipes, toys, and water go a long way. Although the place has a diaper changing station inside the toilet, strollers have to be parked by the door.

It takes around 30 minutes to make a complete tour and my toddler seems to enjoy seeing insects, plants and animals.

There is a souvenir shop on the second floor and a snacks corner for quick bites and drinks. Cash, cards, and suica e-money are all accepted at the park.

WHAT TO SEE

Rare and endangered butterfly species, wild deers, caterpillars, a greenhouse to see the breeding environment of insects, firefiles, etc.

In June and December, children can view fireflies with tiny flashes of light flickering from their abdomen to communicate with their peers in their habitat.
