Although Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was frequently ranked as the most popular fantasy story in children’s literature, very little is known as to how the the eccentric founder and proprietor of the Wonka Chocolate Factory started.

Well, Warner Bros.’ upcoming Wonka, a comedic rendition of the beloved character from a 1964 children’s novel by British author Roald Dahl, will be doing just that.

Set in 15th century Europe, the children’s hero is back making more chocolates than ever as he dreams of putting up a delicious chocolate shop with her mother. As he meets chocolate artisans in Chocolate town, he finds himself in an adventure-filled mayhem where it was forbidden to dream. The exciting, chocolate world filled with imagination stars French-American actor Timothée Chalamet as Wonka who, after seven years of trial and error in making the perfect chocolate candy, sets off to prove people wrong.

All heroes shine because of villains and the film has loads of them. There’s the Chocolate Cartel Triad  jealous of Wonka’s culinary talent, villainous duo Scrubit and Bleacher who run an evil washer house empire, and other rival chocolatiers who Wonka will have to contend with as he works on realising his chocolate dreams.

Chalamet is joined by stars Hugh Grant, Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, Keegan-Michael Key, Matthew Baynton, Matt Lucas, Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean), Jim Carter, Natasha Rothwell, Simon Farnaby, Paterson Joseph, Tom Davis, Rakhee Thakrar, Justin Edwards, Colin O’Brien, Ellie White, Freya Parker and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

If you are wondering whether there are positive takeaways from the film, the scene where Wonka’s mom says, “Every good thing in this world started with a dream, so you hold on to yours,” promises you should.

Wonka was directed by Paul King of the Paddington series, and produced by David Heyman best known for producing all eight installments of the Harry Potter film series.

In theaters on December 8, 2023.
