Japan: No more free COVID-19 vaccinations beyond March 2024

By on September 11, 2023

Under Japan’s immunization law, the cost of Covid-19 vaccinations classified as ’emergency inoculations’ have been covered by public funds to prevent the spread of the disease. But that is going to change.

It was revealed on Friday that the Japanese health ministry panel has decided to end the temporary free Covid-19 vaccines program.  The deadline by which people can get vaccinated free of charge is March 31, 2024 or at the end of fiscal year 2023.

Starting April 2024, COVID-19 vaccine will be provided once-a-year to people 65 years old or over who are at high risk of developing severe COVID-19 symptoms. This will be offered between autumn and winter.  According to reports, it is likely the ministry will require this age group to partially pay out of pocket.

The ‘under 65’ group however will be offered  ‘vaccine-on-demand’ basis and will be required to pay for the full cost.
