Scaling Mount Kilimanjaro, the world-famous climbing destination located in Tanzania, Africa, used to be just for adults.

Now, young kids from all over the world are climbing summits inspiring a whole new breed of mountaineers.

Eleven-year-old Rei Banno is no different.

Climbing the 5,895-meter high has been Rei’s long-cherished dream. Rei and her mother are preparing to travel to Africa early summer if they are able to secure funding for the journey.

Growing up in Yamanashi surrounded by Mount Fuji and other mountains, Rei’s love of mountains started at the age of 4 when she participated at a local mountain climbing event.

At the age of 7, she completed a 43-kilometer traverse course along the Yatsugatake mountain range.

“Mountains are like parks,” says Rei. Enjoying the views and eating food after climbing to the top are what’s most appealing about mountaineering, according to the sixth-grader.
