QR code most preferred payment method by Rakuten subscribers

Subscribers of NTT Docomo, au, Softbank and Rakuten enjoy added perks from payment modes ranging from QR and barcode to credit cards.

Mobile phone subscribers in Japan have become savvy and discerning with their choices. They understand that telecommunication companies are getting business from them equivalent to their total lifetime spend so they expect to be given perks. This is why  a points reward system is widely popular in Japan.

A recent survey by MMD Research Institute proves just that. The survey involving 2,000 mobile phone subscribers aged 18 to 69,  reveals that 73.9% of them use these services for day-to-day shopping other than for paying their monthly phone bills.

Of the total phone subscribers, 86.2% of those respondents were Rakuten mobile phone subscribers, followed by Docomo users at 71.6%, and Softbank at 71.2%.

Of the 1,478 users of one or more carriers, 29.6% hooked to the QR or barcode payment method say it is because of  the ease by which they earn and accumulate points. Twenty six point three percent cite the use of accumulating reward points even without paying attention to it as their reason for choosing such payment method.
