After May 8, patients to defray cost of Covid tests and related services

On May 8, 2023, Japan will downgrade Covid-19 to Category 5 (from Category 2) under the infectious disease law, classifying it to the same grouping as seasonal flu.

This means that if ever you need PCR tests or any outpatient treatment related to Covid from this date, patients will have to pay out of pocket.

The matter was decided based on the government of Japan’s new medical systems policy after reclassification.

Medical institutions other than those currently designated to deal with COVID-19 will also be asked to accept carriers and patients after the reclassification, health minister Katsunobu Kato said.

“We’ll carry out the expansion while giving thorough explanations,” he added.
