Japan to relax eligibility rules to attract many highly skilled career professionals

By on February 17, 2023

The government of Japan announced today it will relax the conditions for obtaining residency status by foreign nationals in order to attract highly skilled career professionals such as researchers and engineers.

The high skill level of foreign nationals who want to work and live in Japan is a strong indication of their productivity and ability to contribute to the country’s overall economic situation.

The Japanese government will grant a five-year visa to those who fulfill new eligibility requirements including an annual income of at least 20 million yen.

Given the need to compete with other countries where demand for highly skilled professionals is growing, Japan aims to introduce the new system in April 2023.

Under the present points system, Japan uses selection factor points to help assess eligibility of a professional to qualify for a “highly skilled professional” visa status.

People who are given that status are eligible for preferential measures, such as a five-year residency.
