Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit Morissette co-founded in 1968 under the Children’s Television Workshop, has announced his death this week.

Sesame Workshop says in a statement on Twitter, “A wise, thoughtful and above all kind leader of the Workshop for decades, Lloyd was fascinated by the power of technology and constantly thinking about new ways it could be used to educate.”

Started from conversations in the late ’60s between Morrisett, ex vice president of the Carnegie Corporation, and TV producer Joan Ganz Cooney, Sesame Street’s unique approach to education became its strength with help from Harvard University developmental psychologist Gerald Lesser.

After Sesame Street made its debut on US public television in November 1969 and received positive reviews, the American educational children’s television series combining live-action, sketch comedy, animation and puppetry educational program, reached 120 million children.

“Without Lloyd Morrisett, there would be no ‘Sesame Street.’It was he who first came up with the notion of using television to teach preschoolers basic skills, such as letters and numbers,” Cooney said in a statement. “He was a trusted partner and loyal friend to me for over 50 years, and he will be sorely missed.”
