Montbell made a light version of the randoseru.

Japan’s outdoor goods company Montbell recently developed ultra light backpacks upon the request of Tateyama Town Mayor amid the increasingly becoming expensive randoserus. Nearly every elementary school-aged child in Japan owns a randoseru, an expensive handcrafted backpack meant to last throughout the child’s elementary school years.

The price of the ‘Wan Pack’, Montbell’s new school backpack is 14,850 yen (including tax) and comes in three colors. In contrast, the average price of a typical randoseru has shot up to 50,000 yen.

The ‘Wan Pack’ school backpack is 35 cm tall, 25 cm wide and has a depth of 15 cm which could easily hold A4 size notebooks and books.  Compared to the leather type randoseru, the Wan Pack weighs about 900 grams lighter.
