Japan tightens border controls for visitors from China

By on January 8, 2023

On Dec. 30 last year, Japan started requiring all travelers from mainland China, where novel coronavirus infections are seeing a spike, to undergo simplified COVID-19 test and self-quarantine at designated facilities should they test positive.

Owing to the expected surge in the number of inbound travelers during the Chinese New Year in late January, Japan decided Sunday to tighten its COVID-19 border controls for visitors from mainland China.

The simplified Covid-19 PCR test requirement has been replaced by a more precise quantitative antigen and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. Travelers flying in directly from mainland China need to provide a negative PCR result of this test taken within 72 hours of departure.

To ensure smooth quarantine proceedings, Japan will continue to ask airlines to limit flight frequency.
