Hageten Ginza serves good tempura rice bowls.

Last year, after months of take-away food, I walked into a restaurant at a touristy place in search of an intense Tendon experience.

My order literally arrived in two minutes replete with soup and pickles yet, it seemed to have been sitting for a while steaming. It arrived soggy and I was disappointed.

This week of Shinnenkais (new year gatherings) gave me an opportunity to go with my work colleagues for lunch to eat a proper meal missing from my day-to-day uber delivery.

Naturally, tempura rice bowl came to mind. Since I decided that my next experience should be pleasant and that the fancily fried tempura arrive hot and crispy, I asked for recommendations from my Japanese colleague.

He took us to Hageten Ginza, one of the oldest tempura restaurant chains in Tokyo that offers decent tempura meals.

A tempura rice bowl for lunch goes anywhere between 1,300 yen and 1,800 yen and quite reasonable by Tokyo standards.

After ordering, a waitress tells you that your order will be deep fried so a waiting time of 3-5 mins is necessary. In the meantime, you get a cup of hot tea while waiting.

All of us had tempura rice bowls and extra orders of shrimp and oyster tempura. Everything was fresh, crispy perfect, delicious and worth the visit.
