You may be surprised by what you will find in Japan’s next-generation vending machines.

These vending machines are no longer exclusive to drinks and snacks. How about a serving of your favorite Tonkotsu ramen from Ippudo or even “gyutan” (braised, grilled ox tongue from Sendai) you only find at gourmet restaurants? If you’re lucky, you may even find one that sells Kenta Gyoza, Japan’s special dumplings brand.

The food sold at these convenient machines are bought frozen. Customers can later pop them in a microwave oven to heat and enjoy in the comfort of their home.

Billed as the dining style of the future, the whole point of this is catering to busy people who want quick delicious food.

Thanks to its strategic locations, these gourmet vending machines are increasingly becoming a necessity. There are now about 5,000 machines sold (as of 2022) since it was first introduced in January 2021.

A row of ten 24/7 vending machines can be found at Gorio Mall, a 5-min walk from JR Asagaya Station in Sumida ward.

This is a smaller spot by the west exit of JR Omori station.
