Nursery school bus operators urged to ensure child safety management

Following a recent incident in which a 3-year old girl died of heatstroke after being left on a school bus, the Japanese government will demand nurseries running school service buses, to review their safety measures and ensure these are being implemented accordingly.

Kawasaki Kindergarten School’s chairman Tatsuyoshi Masuda, 73, who drove the bus that day, said in a conference, “I apologize to the bereaved family for the child’s death.”

“I take it that the cause of this sad accident was that we did not conduct safety measures thoroughly.”

The government will be asking local government officials to conduct an inspection of 10,000 nurseries, kindergartens and facilities providing school bus service in their locality to see whether safety measures are sufficient.

The Japanese government plans to draw up emergency measures to prevent recurrence of similar incidents, including creating a safety handbook on school bus operations and monitoring child attendance properly by the end of October.

Equipping school buses with safety equipment common in some other countries (such as sensors) to prevent a child from being left behind will be discussed.
