Japan opens borders to individual travelers from Oct 11

By on September 23, 2022

Japan will reopen its borders to individual travelers from Oct 11, Prime Minister Kishida has announced yesterday, putting an end to one of the world’s longest-running pandemic travel restrictions.

As a result, the cap on daily arrivals in Japan will also end, he said. Individual tourists will be allowed to enter Japan, visa waivers reinstated, and discounts for domestic travel introduced at the same time.

In 2019, a year before the pandemic, Japan had a record number close to 32 million arrivals from 68 countries and regions. This dramatically went down to about 246,000 last year owing to Japan’s Covid-19-related border restrictions.
