Omicron vaccine rollout likely from September

Japan is discussing moving up the start date of rolling out Omicron vaccines from mid-October to September in response to the seventh COVID-19 wave.

If the improved vaccines developed by Pfizer Inc. and Moderna Inc. receive regulatory approval after the screening process, Japan will start importing them from September.

The new vaccines are a bivalent type with components that can tackle both the BA.1 omicron variant and the original coronavirus strain and effective too against the currently dominant BA.5 variant.
