We might have to take extra care again despite overcoming the sixth wave from Jan to March this year.

The Tokyo metropolitan government raised today its COVID-19 alert level to the highest of the four-tier scale in response to the rapid spread of infections recently.

The medical preparedness alert level goes up to level 2 due to increase in hospitalized coronavirus patients which could put restrictions on regular medical services.

The surge in Covid-19 infections globally is possibly connected to the rise of the Omicron BA.5 variant, which experts say, is much more contagious than the last. It is able to circumvent existing immunity in many people.

The World Health Organization reported today that weekly caseloads  went up for the fifth consecutive week globally after a declining trend since the peak in March 2022.  From July 4-10,  over 5.7 million new cases were reported, a 6% increase compared to the previous week.

The National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Japan projects the BA.5 strain in the first week of July was responsible for 24% of the total infections nationwide and will go over 50 percent in the following week.
