Science experiments in Japanese schools reduced due to the pandemic

By on July 29, 2022

A government survey reveals the country’s Covid-19 response measures had imposed less science experiments and observations among children at Japanese schools.

The percentage of elementary and junior high school children having such activity as part of the science curriculum was reduced to 44.9 percent ( from 64.6 percent in 2018) and limited to once-a-week.

The education ministry said preventing close contact scenarios during such school activities were for the purpose of minimizing the risk of Covid-19 infection.

The survey, conducted as part of this year’s nationwide academic achievement test for elementary school sixth graders and junior high school third graders, also show children are more enthusiastic about studying science.
