Japan’s first monkeypox case reported

Late Monday evening, a couple of days after the World Health Organization declared monkeypox a global health emergency,  a man in Japan who traveled to a European country from late June to mid-July,  tested positive for the viral disease.

The patient in his 30s, is currently hospitalized after having a fever, headache and a rash on July 15.

On Saturday, the United States  reported for the first time, two cases  of the disease in children: a toddler in California and an infant who is not a US resident.

There have been more than 14,000 monkeypox cases reported  in more than 60 countries, including five deaths in Africa.

The incubation period of the disease which spreads through close physical contact, is reported to be anywhere between 5 to 21 days. The symptoms  include fever, extensive rashes, skin lesions and swollen lymph nodes.
