Being in love is just as euphoric as eating chocolates – because the natural chemical the body releases when you’re in love, is also found in cacao.

Word has quickly spread that a chocolate store in Shinjuku offering something new and unique, is creating a buzz in the area.

Choci (short for chocolate) Tokyo, owned by a group of long-term residents, is set to become a favourite go-to store for many chocoholics.

If you are in short supply of happiness due to the prolonged pandemic stress, look to Choci Tokyo’s wide range of pleasurable bites for instant relief.

The star of the show here is chocolate ball. Thirty of its tempting standard flavours are divided into sweet, dark and premium, all with varying degrees in texture, mouthfeel and taste.

Everyone’s taste buds are different. Some like their chocolates sweet, others prefer the flavonoid-rich taste of dark and some go for anything in-between.

As you step into the world of the good mood food, trendsetting cylindrical glass dispensers filled with chocolate balls in many eye-popping colours greet you. But, unlike the intimidating set up of chocolate stores that are made to look like fancy boutiques, Choci Tokyo’s casual, family-friendly vibes, add to the appeal.

Inspired by chocolate stores in Belgium, France, Spain and Italy, customers can choose between paying by weight or getting a pre-packed Premium available in Popcorn, Fruit and Nut Choci balls.

Seeing Japan wrap almost everything in plastic, the store’s weigh-and-pay system setting the tone for the reduction of food packaging waste, is a breath of fresh air.

The European style chocolates here come in euphoric flavours and textures not offered anywhere else. Families who walk by will surely find a flavour to their liking.

Yu, who tried 3 of its flavours says, “My family and I lived in France for 5 years where eating chocolates became a weekly routine. I think we found what we were looking for in terms of flavours we like.”

Trying different balls to see how your brain’s pleasure center reacts when you bite a Choci-full piece, is all part of the in-store tasting experience. When you finally find “the one”, which I guarantee you will, stock up but know that the chocolates stay at peak quality only for about 4 months.

What’s really driving adventurous foodies to come back for more is the store’s excellent flavour profile. Thanks to its French chocolatier’s artisanal skills, world-class ingredients and premier grand cru cacao (from France), his delightful creations have taken chocolate artistry to the next level. These heart-pounding flavours are a must-try.

The goodies you will find at the store are not limited to chocolates. There’s also the ‘Double Chocolate’, one of its best sellers from a range of American style cookies recently added to the menu.

In the coming weeks, the store will be rolling out 10 new lollipop flavours to add to the mix, along with Puffed rice/hazelnut/Vegan Coconut/Cocoa nibs and Berry mix for its chocolate bars.

If you don’t have the time for an in-store experience, save yourself a trip. Place an order online (in English or Japanese) and get them the next day. As the chocolates need to be sealed fresh at 18C, delivery is done via Yamato cool bin for an extra fee of 1,000 yen.

Chocolate balls in jars and packs make for an excellent treat or gift to cheer someone up. Give this place a try!
