The object of  New Year shopping tradition in Japan is to find a lucky bag or  fukubukuro with unknown random contents sold at really bargain prices. These are usually discounted by half or more of the actual price of the goods. The customary practice continued in 2021 with most offerings centered on products that can be used at home.

But as the pandemic continues and many businesses are struggling to survive from the effects of the health crisis, many companies have turned to offering experiences instead of things in 2022 in order to create meaningful value to shoppers.

The first to announce it would be offering a wide variety of experiences suitable to the new norm like a workation, were department stores.

For 10,000 yen, the Seibu department store in Ikebukuro will be offering buyers the opportunity to stay for workation at a resort hotel in central Nagano by the foot of the picturesque Yatsugatake mountain.

For just 17,000 yen, the regular price of a one-night accommodation, you can have 6 straight nights stay at a deluxe twin room complete with breakfast, a sky view from the bathroom window and fresh forest air at the balcony. This special fukubukuro however will  be sold only by lottery to three couples.

Applications for the bag will be accepted at the store from January 1-3, 2022.

If you miss this one, check out other department stores who are busy putting together exciting fukuburo offers.
