Japan Schools mull summer break extension amid covid spikes

By on August 25, 2021

In the midst of the worst surge of COVID-19 cases in Japan,  Local governments are having to make big decisions before students return to school from summer break.

While some have already decided to extend the holidays, others are wrestling with the issue of whether to introduce staggered attendance, for fear of  children spreading infections at home. A recent study in the UK suggests when there is an infection surge in a community, the risks in schools can significantly increase.

The central government will not request nationwide school closures and will leave the decision up to schools in different municipalities.

“We, as the central government, won’t call for blanket closures as we hope for flexible decisions in line with regional circumstances,” education minister Koichi Hagiuda said Friday.

As a result, municipalities are divided over what to do for the new term.
