As Japan’s customary summer gift-giving season “ochugen” approaches, many premium fruit auctions are being held all over the country.

On June 29, the spotlight turned to Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture for the latest pick of the crop – the Juno Heart cherries.

A box of 15 mouth-watering premium cherries fetched around a record-breaking 450,000 yen at Aomori’s first seasonal auction this year.

Grown with utmost care and attention to detail, this large, sweet and plump Juno Heart cherry variety developed by the Aomori Prefectural Government measuring 31 millimeters or more, also goes by the name of “Aomori Heartbeat.”

From Fuji apples to Ruby Roman grapes, Japan has successfully carved out a niche for itself in the high-grade fruits domain.

According to a prefectural government representative, the goal is help them sell the fruit to overseas markets.
