Kids reveal the most delicious chocolate spread sold in Japan. And the winner is…..

Lately, there have been unfamiliar brands appearing in store shelves, challenging the supremacy of the ubiquitous Nutella.

Nutella, being the oldest brand, is considered by many to be the best – but we wanted to see if there was something even better out there.

They say if you want the honest truth, ask kids. We decided to do just that.

We conducted a sweet little test of store-bought chocolate spread and asked kids to rate them.

Each brand has been independently selected by our editor who went for Nutella, Nutkao, Crema Baci Perugina, Darlet and Zebra (without hazelnut), skipping Swiss chocolatier’s expensive Lindt chocolate hazelnut spread. We did the test at one of our contributors’ house where a children’s birthday party was taking place.

We asked seventeen children aged 5-7, to sample a bite-sized bread with 1 brand of spread at a time. The kids were asked to drink water as they sample the next. They ranked the bread from 1-5 with a numbered sticker –  1 being the most delicious and 5, the least appealing. To keep things fair, the kids as well as their moms didn’t know which brands they were sampling.

Only after the taste testing was complete were the jars shown and the brands revealed.

And the clear winner is….. CREMA BACI PERUGINA!

14 out of 17 children rated Crema Baci Perugina number 1 – being “the most yummy”.  They even asked for more after the test.

Crema Baci Perugina by Nestlé is relatively new in Japan having been released in March 2021. Compared to the 4 other brands, it is creamier with crunchy grains of hazelnuts, and less sweet than Nutella.

Nutella, being the one with the most familiar taste, ranked second with only a 2-point advantage over Nutkao. Although both Italian brands taste similar, Nutkao has less sugar and is less expensive than Nutella .

It is easy to see why the kids have ranked Darlet choco cream, (a product of Spain) and Zebra Choco cream spread (from Macedonia) the lowest. Both these products have unique and complex flavors. Darlet for example is a choco spread with hazel nut flavor, but it also has hints of banana and orange. Zebra has a very strong soy flavor.
