Instagram for children is a bad idea, say 44 US attorneys general.

In March this year, BuzzFeed News  reported that Facebook would start building a kids-only version of Instagram for use by those under 13 years old. Facebook confirmed the news saying it is “exploring a parent-controlled experience” on Instagram.

A group of 44 American attorneys general wrote to Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg urging him to abandon the plan.

In the letter, the attorneys general of 40 US states expressed concern about the effects of social media on the physical and emotional well-being of children, the potential for increased cyberbullying, possible vulnerability to online predators, and Facebook’s past record of ‘failing to protect the safety and privacy of children on its platform, despite claims that its products have strict privacy controls’.

Facebook said the new app would give parents more control over what children who are already online are exposed to, will make every effort to protect children, and will not show advertising on the platform.
