Japan’s health ministry panel of experts reported on Wednesday that the rapidly increasing number of covid cases is linked to the mutant strains of the novel coronavirus. The experts warned that the surge is more pronounced in the Kansai region.

Similar cases have also been observed not only in Kansai but in Tokyo and the central prefecture of Aichi as well. The advisory board urges the public to stay more vigilant by following safety protocols.

“The pace of increase in the number of infection cases and that of severely ill coronavirus patients is considerably faster than before,” Takaji Wakita, head of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, said at a press conference.

New covid cases and those in severe condition have been on the rise around the country since March, the panel said. The medical system in place in the Kansai region particularly Osaka and Hyogo prefectures is presently under strain and in dire need of medical staff and hospital beds for seriously ill patients as a result.

The advisory board has stressed the importance of asking people to refrain from holding social drinking and other parties and alerting people again to the risk of infection clusters related to daytime karaoke. Of all covid infections, a significant increase was seen among people in their 20s and 30s in many areas where the coronavirus is spreading, said the board.
