Tell presents “Together with TELL” this holiday season

By on December 15, 2020

In a year that none of us could have ever anticipated, TELL has been there every single day without fail providing support, resources, and connections as many struggled with the economic and social impact of COVID-19.

Ten months later, as we head towards the end of the year and the holidays, many experts are worried about the additional strains COVID-19 will place on people’s mental health as we continue to deal with the loneliness, isolation and financial stressors of this pandemic.

The last few months have already seen an increase in the suicide rates across many age groups, significantly impacting women and youth, in Japan. Recent studies in the US & UK report similar findings, in which the impact of quarantining and school closures increased young people’s levels of loneliness. This increase is strongly associated with a rise in mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. For many foreigners in Japan, returning home for end of year holidays will not be an option, and they will again miss an important opportunity to be with their loved ones, offer support and feel that needed connection.

While we all feel the optimism that the coming year brings, it is essential to remember that December and January will be difficult months for many. Given the challenges we are all currently facing, every one of us needs to be mindful of our mental health and wellness during this time.

These are some of the symptoms of holiday depression: feeling withdrawn or disconnected, not enjoying things you once did, lack of motivation, problems sleeping, lack of appetite, feeling irritable, difficulty sleeping, concentrating, or making decisions. If you or someone close to you is suffering with holiday depression please connect them with professional services and let them know TELL is here for them.
