How to make a delicious brewed coffee at home using Starbucks’ tips.

A daily cup of coffee can help relieve stress caused by unprecedented challenges we are experiencing due to the outbreak. When you want to calm down the nerves and relax, coffee may not be the first thing you think of. But a Japanese study “Relationship Between Coffee Drinking and Reduction of Mental Stress in Young Women” proves taking coffee extracted at 80°C enhances feeling of relaxation.

Starbucks Japan shares 4 basic tips to achieve great tasting coffee at home. It starts with using the proper proportion of coffee to water, selecting the best grind for the brewing method, and using quality water and fresh coffee.

1: How much coffee should you put?
The general rule is two tablespoons (10 grams) of ground coffee for each 180 milliliters of water.

2: Grind
As a rule of thumb, the longer the coffee grounds come into contact with water, the coarser the grind of your beans should be. You can bring out the best flavor by grinding according to the equipment you use.

3: Use only Fresh water

While it may not seem like an important ingredient, coffee is 98 percent water. The type of water used when brewing greatly affects the final taste. Always use clean, fresh water that is filtered or free of impurities – avoid soft water or well water. Water heated to just off the boil (30 seconds after boiling)  90º-96ºC does the best job of extracting the coffee’s full range of flavors. Water that is too cool will mute the flavor and dull the coffee’s aroma.

4: Keep coffee beans fresh
To enjoy the full flavor of coffee, grind the beans directly before making the coffee. Coffee’s biggest enemies are oxygen, moisture, light and heat. Always store coffee in an airtight container in a cool and dark place, and use up within 1-2 weeks. Storing coffee in the refrigerator or freezer can result in moisture from condensation and is not recommended for daily use. If coffee needs to be kept for more than two weeks without being used, store it in the freezer in an airtight container. Grinding exposes more surface area to oxygen, releasing flavor and freshness. Brewed coffee should always be stored in a thermal carafe and never left on the burner or reheated.


After learning the four basics, let’s make coffee using the simple hand drip method.

You need:

300 ml of ground coffee for one large mug (20 g / medium-fine ground coffee slightly coarser than granulated sugar)
hot water,
dripper, kettle, lightweight spoon, paper filter, server, mug, dripper holder

1: Keep the dripper, pot and mug warm.
2: Alternately attach the parts of the filter that fit together to the folding dripper. Put ground coffee powder and level it.
3: Gently pour hot water in small amounts initially making sure the entire ground coffee is wet. Allow to steam for 20 to 30 seconds. The amount of drip should be about 1 or 2 drops of coffee to bring out the maximum umami.
4: After steaming, pour hot water several times in a circular motion from the center (be careful not to pour hot water directly on the paper filter). Stop pouring when the coffee layer reaches about 70 to 80% of the dripper.
5: When the amount you want to add is extracted, remove the server, rotate it gently to stir, and keep the concentration constant. Pour it into a cup and you’re good to go!

For Iced Coffee
1: Put twice as much ground coffee in a paper filter and set.
2: Add more ice than the amount of coffee to be extracted
3: Pour hot water the same way you would hot coffee.
