Quarantine in Tokyo possible. Here’s what families should stock up on.

By on March 6, 2020

Up until now, school closures across the country due to coronavirus scare, have been  a ‘request’ by the government of Japan, and not exactly an order. This is why some schools and offices have remained open while others have shut down. The Japanese law limits the government of what it can do to better contain the coronavirus in the country, without infringing on the rights of people.

Worry had seeped across Japan however, after media reports came out yesterday that Prime Minister Abe is pushing for the “emergency virus bill”, a temporary law allowing him to declare a state of emergency if needed, to better contain the increasing number of coronavirus infection in the country. This may mean the Japanese government restricting free movement by people or putting Tokyo, or any region like Hokkaido, where virus infections have consistently occurred, under quarantine. Should this  become necessary to bring the number of infections down to zero, everyone will be required to stay home. This is already being done in Mainland China so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Tokyo comes next on the list. Please don’t panic buy and just get at least a 2-week supply of what your family needs. Remember, we are all in the fight against the killer virus together.  What we can tell you now is be prepared.

THE BARE ESSENTIALS

  1.  Food.  To be honest, no one knows how long a quarantine is going to take. Remember that perishable goods may defeat the purpose so go for canned goods or stockable food items. For those with a big freezer, you can go for frozen meats, fish or seafood including veggies, fruits and bread. Grains, pasta, cereal bars and seasonings are great to stash in your cupboard. Kids and infants going to be kept indoors should have a good supply of snacks, formula and baby food. Include pet foods in your shopping list if you have furry companions at home.
  2. Clean drinking water. It’s good to have a good supply of clean water. Energy drinks like pocari sweat with electrolytes would be good in case you get sick.
  3. Essential toiletries. Toilet and tissue paper, toothpaste, mouthwash, laundry detergent, fabric softener, cleaning detergents, sanitary napkins, masks, hand sanitizer, gloves (for cleaning), diapers for infants. If you can find a bottle of ethanol, that will keep your family protected in case you run out of hand sanitizers.
  4. Supplements and Medications You don’t want to run out of your essential vitamins and medications. You will be stuck indoors without sunlight so it would be good to have Vitamins C & D ready. If you are taking any medication, think of having at least a month’s supply. It’s also a good idea to grab cough syrups.
  5. Spare batteries, light bulbs, coffee filter paper and other miscellaneous things you buy on a regular basis.
