How to make a mask out of kitchen paper towels.

By on February 26, 2020

As Japan enters a new phase of coronavirus outbreak, not having masks for protection is a major disruption to our daily life.

Most convenience stores in the city replenish their stocks everyday. But due to the high demand, the masks are too often sold out by the time you hit the store.

At times like these, a DIY mask to block out dust and debris invented in 2017  by Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, comes useful and, for the most part, dirt cheap. You don’t have to be an origami expert to make one. All you need is a kitchen paper, stapler, and 2 rubber bands (everything is sold at 100 yen stores).

“When my daughter put it on,” one mom said, “It’s not painful. It feels good.” “Although it is lacking in airtightness, it is good enough for protection against sand dust etc. .”

How to make one
(1) Take a sheet of kitchen paper and make an accordion fold about 1.5cm in width.
(2) Attach a rubber band to both ends and staple.
(3) Expand the folded kitchen paper.

Here’s another way to do it using kitchen paper, masking tape and elastic.
