Mandatory Liability insurance for Tokyo cyclists starts April 1st, 2020.

Up until now, people can ride a bicycle around the city without having a liability insurance.

But that’s all going to change from April 1st, 2020. Tokyo’s new ordinance requires all bicycle owners in Tokyo to take out a liability insurance.

Insurance companies have started making payment options easy through convenience stores and smartphones. The cost to insure your bicycle runs between 100 and 300 yen a month.

Bicycle liability insurance (Jitensha Hoken) covers the costs if you injure someone or damage other people’s property while riding your bicycle. What it does not cover are costs of damage to yourself or your bike, regardless of whose fault the accident was.
