Family restaurants Gusto and Jonathan’s will no longer be open 24/7

Meals on the cheap and all-you-can-drink corner for 300 yen or less at Tokyo’s so-called “famires” or family restaurants have long been its most attractive sales point. These family restaurants also welcome screaming children at any time of day.

However, family-style restaurants Gusto and Jonathan’s operated by Skylark Holdings are feeling the squeeze as demands for 24-hour operation decrease and rising labor costs affect profits.

Skylark Holdings Co. announced on Monday that 24-hour operations at all of its 150 restaurants in Japan will stop by April. Skylark is planning to cut operating hours by 1,300 hours.

After Skylark ceases 24-hour operation, it will concentrate on peak mealtime hours and installing electronic devices through which customers place orders. The adjustment is estimated to improve profitability.

The Royal Host chain, one of Skylark’s competitors, was the first family restaurant operator to stop its 24-hour operations in 2017.
