Meet Laurent Simons, the first 9-year old to get a Bachelor’s Degree

By on November 15, 2019

Laurent, a nine-year old Belgian boy is not your regular student. He has a photographic memory which makes him learn so quickly. It just takes days for him to master subjects what otherwise would take weeks.

At a tender age of six when children start primary school, Laurent was already leading a research project at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam.  The child prodigy received his high school diploma at age seven.

Laurent who comes from a family of doctors, is very much ahead of the pack. In March 2019, he started taking a course to become an Electrical Engineer at Eindhoven University. Just nine months in, he is on track to graduate in December.

This makes Laurent the youngest person to earn a Bachelor’s degree beating Michael Kearney of the University of Alabama who graduated at age ten in 1994.

In an interview with CNN, the parents of the boy, Lydia and Alexander said that they noticed something very special about Laurent. Lydia jokingly attributes his son’s extraordinary ability to “eating a lot of fish during the pregnancy.”
